Dental Bridge

Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental bridges are a type of dental treatment that aims to restore tooth function and aesthetics. At the same time, dental bridges are fixed prostheses designed to fill the space between the teeth, prevent the displacement of adjacent teeth, and prevent damage to the jaw joints or the supporting tissues of the teeth.

Dentists place them over natural teeth or implants. They cannot stand independently and need a base (a solid root of adjacent teeth) for an abutment. When attached to natural teeth, neighboring teeth must be machined so that a bridge can be placed (fixed) on them. After the procedure, an image of the tooth takes to make a crown. Dental bridges are one of the most preferred dental treatments by professionals and patients due to many advantages, including:

  • They allow the patient to improve appearance and facial harmony, as missing teeth cause problems in biting and reduce the distance between the nose and chin, leading to facial asymmetry.
  • Dental bridges are less expensive than dental implants and are commonly used for a few missing teeth.
  • They are durable and protect themselves well over time; as long as there are no more than two pieces between the two posts, good maintenance and excellent pre-occlusion work are done.
  • It is a more stable and effective solution than prostheses.

Dental bridges in Turkey are a method popularly preferred by patients. This is why thousands of foreign tourists come to Turkey every year.

What is a dental bridge? What are the types of dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a type of prosthesis placed in the mouth to replace one or more missing teeth. As the name suggests, its job is to act as a bridge between two teeth, which may be the patient’s natural teeth or implants, and the gap left by the lost tooth.

Before placing a bridge, the dentist performs a series of tests (x-rays, photographs, impressions, etc.). This way, measurements are taken, and the mold to work on can be made. Thanks to this preliminary study, the dentist can adjust the future prosthesis according to the patient’s bite and the shape and color of the adjacent teeth.

In our dental clinic, we pay special attention to this preliminary study. We don’t forget that we are dealing with a completely personalized treatment for patients. Therefore, the better we do the initial planning, the better we ensure that the bridge we place fits the patient’s mouth in terms of functionality and aesthetics. Check out the dental bridge treatment stages in Turkey:

  • Abrasion: If the adjacent natural teeth of the person to be treated are still present, the dentist abrades them to leave room for the bridge. In this way, crowns can glue on them.
  • Temporary dental bridge placement: After the teeth abrade, the specialist places a temporary dental bridge over them. This is because it takes several days to produce the final dental bridge. For this reason, the temporary dental bridge prevents the mouth from losing its aesthetics or functionality.
  • Final dental bridge placement: Once we have the last dental bridge, the dentist glues the structure to the teeth to act as abutments.

With a thorough preliminary study and correct treatment, the dental bridge will not be noticeable from the outside. Therefore, if good pre-planning includes good working of shape and color, the bridge’s appearance will be very natural and indistinguishable from the rest of the patient’s teeth.

Dental bridges bond over natural teeth or implants placed lateral to the edentulous space, unlike partial dentures. Expert must treat these supporting teeth to support the bridge properly. There are four types of dental bridges:

  1. Traditional dental bridges: This is the most common type of bridge made of porcelain or zirconium.
  2. Cantilever dental bridges: These bridges support the prosthesis from only one side of the edentulous area. This type of bridge uses when there is only one tooth next to the edentulous space or in areas where chewing pressure isn’t excessive.
  3. Maryland dental bridge: Also known as a resin bridge, this type of bridge is usually used only at the front of the mouth with very little chewing pressure. The abutment consists of a dental prosthesis fused with metal bands attached to the tooth with resin.
  4. Implant-supported dental bridge: Like its name, this dental bridge uses dental implants instead of crowns or other types.

As we have seen, tooth replacement can do using various materials such as gold, metal, porcelain, or a combination of these. Some dental bridges are more expensive than others. Together with our dentist, you can decide which dental bridge is best for your particular situation based on the placement, function, aesthetics, and price.
